Home from the holidays

Diogenes's picture

I stayed at my Mom's for Christmas this year, which was kind of weird because the last time that happened was almost 35 years ago. I remember why. There was not enough room for me. There is still not enough room for me.

It's her castle and the rules are love it or leave it. A simple and effective strategy that has worked, for the most part.

Mom claims that she watches hardly any TV even though the TV is almost always on. She likes news, weather, and shows like Wheel of Fortune; programs with no time commitment or plot. After all, she has a busy retirement.

The favorite over the holidays was channel 106, which I shall call The Fireplace channel because it featured a crackling fire set in a cozy 32 inch fireplace. Every now and then, a poker appears to stoke the fire.

She is not troubled by the strike of the Hollywood Screenwriters Guild.

Most of her grandchildren are in their teens now, so their visits are less frequent. My visit gave mom an opportunity work out and stretch those maternal instincts once again.

Mom is a wonderful lady who loves all 5 of her children dearly and still feels compelled to feed and nuture us; if not filling our bellies with food, then filling our minds with her wisdom.

She has had the most challenging life of all of us, but carries it with the sunniest disposition and the least complaint. She has served as a counsellor, a financial advisor and even a banker, but always first as a mother.

She dispenses advice freely (sometimes too freely) but her ideas are never intended to harm, only to protect. I can never express how truly grateful I am to you Mom.

Oh uh, by the way, those sample packs of Metamusil that you gave us? Well, it turns out the best before date occured about 12 years ago.

So I'm going to throw them out - if that's OK with you?

Love,

Your son
